Rovás Rune Translator
Translate English and Hungarian into the Old Hungarian (Rovás) script — a thousand-year-old runic alphabet from the Eurasian steppe. Free, fast, and faithful to the tradition.
What is Rovás?
Rovás (Rovásírás, also called Old Hungarian or Székely-Hungarian script) is a runic alphabet used by Hungarians for over a thousand years — carved into wood, bone, and stone, and read from right to left. It is a fully encoded Unicode script with more than forty letters, still taught and used as living Hungarian heritage today.
Hungarian Runes, Not Norse Runes
Looking for a rune translator? There are two very different traditions. The Norse or Viking runes — the Elder Futhark — come from Germanic Scandinavia. Rovás, the script on this site, is the runic alphabet of the Hungarians, born on the Eurasian steppe and shaped for the sounds of the Hungarian language. If you want your words in the Hungarian runic script, you are in the right place.
