Question 1

What is Rovás?

Accepted Answer

Rovásírás (also called Old Hungarian or Székely-Hungarian script) is the ancient runic alphabet of the Hungarians. It was used for over a thousand years to carve inscriptions into wood, bone, and stone, and is still part of living Hungarian heritage today.

Question 2

Is this a real alphabet?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Rovás is a fully encoded Unicode script (Unicode block U+10C80–U+10CFF) with 40+ letters, taught and used by cultural organizations, linguists, and historians.

Question 3

How do I write my name in Rovás?

Accepted Answer

Type your name in the translator. The tool converts English to Hungarian first (because Rovás encodes Hungarian sounds), then maps each sound to its matching rune.

Question 4

Why is the script written right to left?

Accepted Answer

Historically, Rovás was carved with a knife or chisel into wood or stone. It was natural for a right-handed carver to cut from right to left — and the tradition stuck.

Question 5

How accurate is the translation?

Accepted Answer

The English-to-Hungarian step uses AI (Google Gemini) and prioritizes traditional Hungarian words over modern loanwords. The Hungarian-to-Rovás conversion uses standard Unicode mapping — exact and reproducible.
